What is STEP Beyond Borders?

- Arts, culture, and heritage initiatives
Programs are designed to combine social impact with cultural immersion and personal growth.
Can international students do internships abroad with STEP Beyond Borders?

Do you offer NGO internships in India, Nepal, and Armenia?
Yes. Our NGO internships provide hands-on experience in community development, education, women’s empowerment, child welfare, social research, nonprofit management, and project implementation across all three destinations.
These placements are especially suitable for students studying international development, social work, public policy, sociology, education, and related fields.
Can I volunteer in an orphanage?
No. STEP Beyond Borders does not offer orphanage volunteering programs in India, Nepal, or Armenia.
Research by international child protection organizations has shown that short-term orphanage volunteering can unintentionally harm children’s emotional well-being. Frequent arrivals and departures of volunteers may create attachment and trust issues for children, and in some countries, orphanage tourism has contributed to the unnecessary institutionalization of children who have living family members.
We believe children thrive best in stable environments with long-term caregivers, educators, family members, and trained professionals.
Can I receive academic credit for my internship or volunteer program?
Yes. Many universities accept our programs for:
- Academic credit
- Practicum or fieldwork requirements
- Service-learning courses
- Capstone projects
- Independent study or research placements
We can provide documentation, supervision support, evaluations, and learning objectives when required by your institution.
Why do I need to pay to volunteer abroad?

- Orientation and program coordination
- Local staff and community partnerships
- Emergency support and project materials
These contributions ensure a safe, well-organized, and impactful experience while supporting the communities we work with.
Can I volunteer and travel at the same time?
Yes. Many participants combine volunteering or internships with cultural activities, weekend excursions, and independent travel. This allows you to make a meaningful contribution while exploring India, Nepal, or Armenia.
Is volunteering abroad ethical?

Our goal is sustainable impact, mutual learning, and respectful cultural exchange rather than “voluntourism.”
